You might not think fans care, but when Michael Bay talked about the reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, he said something that everyone is hoping he mis-spoke. Normally, nowadays folks take a ‘see and wait’ frame of mind. But this is Michael Bay we are talking about. Bay and remakes are a potion that apparently do not mix.

In case you skimmed the headline or thought it was a joke, it’s not. The Heroes From A Half Shell…are from outer space.

The Huffington Post says:

“These turtles are from an alien race,” he said, “And they’re going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely loveable.”

Until now they were referred to as mutant ninja turtles, not alien ninja turtles. For fans of the comics, the traditional backstory for the “Ninja Turtles” is that they were regular turtles who mutated after being exposed to a radioactive substance.

Needless to say, the fans are not too pleased with Bay for changing the origins of the beloved “Ninja Turtles.”

Also at the site is some reaction from comics and/or Turtles fans. When I heard first heard this story yesterday, I thought Bay was misquoted or that someone spiked his orange juice. Maybe that’s all it is – a Freudian slip. But again, it’s Bay, a successful director known for excess and rapid-fire videogame like action who also is responsible, in whole or it part, for many failed attempts at horror and suspense remakes. And the filmmakers *did* want to go a new direction…
